Silly childhood songs

Postby debih » 12 Mar 2013, 15:17

Following on from Allys thread which has resulted in mad skipping songs, what silly songs do you remember from your childhood days that were sung by the children.

The one that brings back lots of memories for me is one that we would sing on the bus on school trips, alongside such classics as one thousand green bottles....

I can remember the tune but don't know what it really is but the song went

On top of spaghetti
All covered in cheese
I lost my poor meatball
When somebody sneezed

It rolled off the table
And onto the floor
And then my poor meatball
Rolled out of the door

It rolled down the garden
And under a bush
And then my poor meatball
Was NOTHING BUT MUSH.

I still remember sitting on the back seat (oh yes, I was a back seat girl), with my friends, scoffing my egg sandwiches (why did your parents always give you egg sandwiches for a school trip) and singing at the top of my voice.

It's 'On top of Old Smokey' but I only know your words too :D

My dad played cricket and for a few years everyone went to all the Sunday away matches on a coach, which resulted in us kids knowing a lot of very rude rugby-type songs  :D
I never sat anywhere but the back, on any coach

We sang this one...

On top of old smokey
All covered in sand
I shot my poor teacher
With an elastic band

I went to his funeral
I went to his grave
But instead of some flowers
I threw a grenade!

The back of the bus was THE place to be...

I've never heard that one. I want to be 10 again so I can sit on the back seat and sing your version. In fact, I might teach it to the kids next time I go on a school trip (on which, I am still a back seat girl. Children aren't allowed to sit on the back seat so me and my friend Jo always go there. Children aren't allowed to eat or drink on the bus either - but we are back seat girls and do what we want.  ).

I'll have to think a little, Debih.

At the moment I can't think of any childhood songs that we used to sing that would be
suitable for such a refined place as Vocal Voices.

Mostly, being boys, our songs were usually a little on the rude side.

I like your version of 'On Top Of Old Smokey'.
