Jan..... Control Panel>>>Region and Language>>>Keyboards and Languages tab>>>Change Keyboard button>>>In the General tab click the Add button.... then pick and choose whatever your heart desires.

If you change keyboards often you can show an icon in the taskbar from the Language Bar tab.

Or hold the left Alt key down and press the left shift repeatedly until it shows the EN keyboard in the status bar. I use this to temporarily change the keyboard in French systems when someone asks me to look at their French machine. I touch type in UK mode so not an issue.

If it keeps changing back to Portuguese, then the system settings are wrong and you need to default them to UK. It's slightly different from what WM told you to do, an additional action on one of the other tabs.

For future reference, if you are stuck, you can always find the character map in the start menu, Windows Accessories. From there you can double click the @ symbol and copy it to paste into email. I have to do this from time to time with systems which have a US keyboard and I'm accessing them remote from a system which has a UK keyboard and I need a backslash key. Always good to remember.

Just to add extra information you might not want but can help. Holding down the Alt key (left one) and pressing 0064 on the numeric keypad will also insert an @ symbol. Something useful to write down and keep by the PC in case it changes again.

Jan, sorry - didn't see this until now. Hopefully you got it sorted but if not; your laptop at the bottom right of the screen about 2cm from the edge had three letters saying either ENG or POR... originally it was ENG and when you clicked on that you had the option to change it

OK Jan, this is where it gets silly. Below are four physical keyboard layouts and hopefully one matches your laptop keyboard.

They are:
Image UK

Image US

Image Brazil

Image Portuguese

The characters in black are the ones printed on the keys. The ones in blue are available when the Alt Gr key is also pressed.

Please look carefully and let me know which layout you have.
