I've never changed ISP, a friend had an absolute nightmare switching to Sky a few years ago - it was one mess up after another and she was offline for a total of three months and her experience put me off!

It was so easy Jo.

The router arrived a few days ago and switch over day was yesterday. The hardest part about the whole thing was having to move the dining table to get to the telephone socket!

I plugged it all in and followed the instructions to change the ISP on the laptop - the longest part about that was not knowing what button to press to find the ISP connection in the first place so that was rather trial and error.

Then I followed the wireless printers online helpline instructions to change that. The thing that took the longest on that was finding the USB cable so I could plug the laptop into the printer.

The girls ipods took seconds to do and the Wii would have been very quick - if only I could have found the tv control to put it on the right channel to get the Wii up and running!!

The telephone wasn't working for a couple of hours (the letter from Sky did say that it could happen slightly later than the internet) but was working fine by 5pm.

I set myself up an email account with Sky and as I was reading all the blurb about it I found that I could have all my emails to my old address diverted to my new Sky account - that took seconds to do. And whilst reading the blurb (I didn't know too much about it all as Mick had sorted it out) I found out that we get free wifi connection in certain "Cloud" hotspots - the girls will be pleased about that as it means that they might be able to use their ipods when out and about.

I just need to do the Kindle Fire when Mick gets home and the other laptop when it arrives home from the menders. Oh and the Wii - if the tv controls are ever found again!

I'm especially impressed that you did all the router wireless stuff. It's fairly straightforward but most people just seem to want the technology to do it for you. The reality of that is the technology will then do it for everyone else who wants to use your wireless.....

I see that "The Cloud" is a Sky product. The finder is here. They appear to be all over the place.

Glad you had such a reasonable experience. My Orange router had to be replaced last year and they sent the new router fully configured to use, all we had to do was plug it in. The service you expect.

It would be nice if you could order your ISP service with a wifi SSID and passphrase preconfigured for you. Then you would take out one router and plug in another and everything would continue to work. But that's a touch too easy isn't it.

BTW, remember the TV has buttons on the case somewhere (side, top, bottom, back). You're looking for the input button or, worst case, the menu button.

The only thing I would say about using ISP mail is that when you move ISP, it is a perfect opportunity to move to a cloud mail service (gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo etc). OK I pay for my Yahoo small business account but it's only $12 a month and I get my mail services seamlessly everywhere, as well as webmail if the place I'm at is awkward about POP mail. You can also forward your old ISP mail to cloud mail services. Gmail is free for this and it works most places.

Remember that if you want to send mail from outside of your home, you will need a free mail service or have to use the Sky webmail anyway.... I always think that when you change ISP it's a perfect opportunity to get out of the whole ISP mail address thing once and for all. You then never need to worry about it again.

We don't rely on nor use our ISP email address weather. Too much hassle telling everyone our new email address when we move. We bought a domain name many moons ago, and use that address with the email part accessed through gmail. Never looked back after that.
