Anyone's cat had the Covenia injection?

Postby miasmum » 17 Feb 2013, 14:11

It is an antibiotic injection that last two weeks. Mowgli is not eating brilliantly and I think it is because of his snuffly nose. I can tempt him to eat by warming it, opening a fresh bag etc, but when he eats he snorts like a pig because he can't breathe through his nose, I also don't think he can smell things brilliantly either.

I was talking to Simon about it and he suggested the Convenia injection. As I am not sure it is an infection I was hesitant, but I have put some antibiotic eye cream in his eyes and they have cleared up so maybe an antibiotic would sort his nose out.

At least if it doesn't we will have ruled it out.

But there are some negative comments on the web about the covenia injection, so just wondered if anyone had encountered it

Thanks xx

Monty was given a 2 week AB jab last year, and Harry had one yesterday... and I'm fairly certain it was Covenia but I didn't ask to be honest. I think the net is a wonderful thing but can also scare monger something horrendous - and I'll be honest, the same goes for CatChat. I know some stuff about cats but would hope that when it comes to medical issues my vet knows what needs to be known. I think - as with everything - there are pro's and con's to every medication and sadly there are some pets that react worse than others. I would like to know what the ratio is though = how many animals have the injection and have had a bad reaction vs how many animals have had it and it's done the world of good for them.

Mention your concerns to Simon, but he sounds like a vet who knows his stuff and obviously cares. I'd be surprised if he wasn't able to either put your worries at ease or offer an alternative.

Thank you. I do trust him and my friend works in a big vets in London and she says they use it constantly and have never had a bad reaction, so I will book him in.

It is an expensive injection, so it would be nice if I didn't have to pay the consult fee as we only talked about it last Friday. Dream on

Shell, just wondering how Mowgli is getting on after the Convenia?

I was back at the vet with Harry this morning as he's got an ear infection that just isn't clearing up and I got a printout today of what has been done so far (for insurance purposes) and I saw he was given Convenia last week; and he seems to be OK.

He has it on Tuesday Ria. I wonder if you could use Thornit on a cats ears? I used it on the dog when his ear infection wouldn't clear up, vets hate it though

Looks like you can and great reviews too
