New Manager

I am going to apply for the job as the new manager of the England team.
A few million a year for doing nothing will help my bank balance even if the exchange rate falls. Free travel and expenses as well.
I don't know much about football and the so called experts can't seem to get it right so I may do better.

Take heart. The Radio Forth morning team made a song about how Scotland didn't qualify and was sitting on the sidelines looking on whilst every other team in the UK made it there...

Which means their own players have to go outside the country to play in other leagues in the UK and Europe.

Nobody ever seems to think that buying players in from outside the country to win league matches means that we are not bringing our own talent up with the same drive and therefore our best players will wind up going home to play against us when we play as a country.

I saw this with the change of management at Dundee United. They at were top of the Premiership in Scotland most of the time, high in Europe and Scotland did well in the world. United did not buy in ANY players, ever. It was a policy to bring up local (all of Scotland really), talent and train them in the team.

When management changed in United I was keenly interested to see what this did to the Scottish team. I respectfully submit, that a little over a decade later, that impact has been seen....

Not quite true, Molly, the Icelandic Premier League was founded in 1912 and currently operates with 12 clubs, 6 of whom are in Reykjavik. It's sponsored by Pepsi.

The current champions are Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar (aka FH) who play in Hafnarfjorour, on the south-west coast. They're due to play Dundalk in the next UEFA Champions League. In fact, back in 2008, they played Aston Villa in the Champions League and lost 2-5 on aggregate.

There's 3 national leagues under the Premier, then four provincial leagues at Level 5.

On a personal note, I'm delighted with Iceland's win against the overpaid dilettantes of English football. Hopefully Hodgson will now become the new Conservative Party leader, and Cameron can go manage the football team.
