Our "new" grandson

Postby tonicha » 08 Apr 2016, 18:06

Alex :D :D :D

Sonia told him to look on us as his English grandparents     and, at 18, I suppose he is.

But he mucked in, even ate my soup and said it was good ;) well, he had to, really  I left him and Grumpy alone a few times, so they could do the male bond thingy

We spoke nothing but English, even though we were all tempted to Portuguese, every now and then. He also learnt a couple of new words :Hi: :Hi: :Hi: Lush and peckish

He's coming back, as and when he can, due to schooling times.

He wants to join the army and has to be fluent in English for that    I actually think he's pretty good now, but he struggles with confidence.

And his dad has said that, in 4 weeks, we are going to dinner at their house and Alex will speak to us in English, to prove to his dad that he's good enough.

His dad can't speak a word, apart from "hello"

That just cracked me up

I do think the best way to learn a language is by immersing oneself in it and just having to get on with it. I don't 'do' grammar, never really got it.. but I'd like to think I have an ear for languages and I'm always happy to try my 10 or so words on some poor unsuspecting soul.

I think that's brilliant, Ton, and as a brave lad ("But he mucked in, even ate my soup and said it was good") he should do well in the army, or the Diplomatic Corps. ;)

Now, have you taught him the naughty words yet? After all to be fluent you need to know all facets of the language and when and how to correctly use them.
