I was on Windows 7. I had downloaded Windows 10 but not installed it.

I did the same last year some time Ossie. Not sure you ever saw my post on the computer board when I was asking about the upgrade options, but after a few people here commented that W10 wasn't all it seems to be so I cancelled the upgrade and haven't had any messages since. And very much PHEW by the sounds of it

I have updated my netbook to W10 which was a disaster because I rushed it and did not follow my own advice and left a huge (3/4 of the drive) compressed file on it. Which terminally messed up the hard drive.

I finally bit the bullet and bought a SSD (memory drive, very fast) and 8gb of ram (100% upgrade), because my netbook had hit it's RAM ceiling and was taking 20 minutes to start up. Now it's pretty fast.

I've upgraded a few virtual machines and those have mainly gone OK. I'm not really lost that much in W10 because I've been playing in the setup (cr)Apps since Windows 8 on my Laptop. I can advise that you use the search function in both Setup and Control Panel (which you will find in Start Menu->All Apps->Windows System).

I've never used the search, for configuration things I should know, before, but they have really messed around with them good time this time and sometimes I find it hard to get to stuff I should just know.

I keep promising myself that I'll upgrade my laptop after I've taken it apart and replaced the BD drive with a 3rd hard drive. But I've also nominally associated that with a motherboard upgrade to fix the stuff I borked with a cup of coffee, so it's taking a while as the motherboard is £200 and the upgrade to my netbook was £150 and my tablet was £140... Ditto my desktop, I want to do a complete motherboard replacement and hard drive update but, again, cost etc. Although I'll have to bite that bullet before the end of June now.

I found the process for installing W10 clean and then upgrading it with your own retail key, if you have one. Preinstalled OEM keys don't work... Well I believe they don't although there are tools to allow you to get that key. So you can, if you want, install W10 as a clean install after the upgrade period. Allegedly.. My Technet keys don't work so I don't know.

If you want to ignore the windows update, you can go to the Windows Updates, the next time it's offered and right click on the "upgrade to windows 10" update and hide it. That stops it nagging you for a while.
