I just can't understand how businesses can afford to make such reductions.

When I was a young man, I was a partner in a business manufacturing toys.
We fixed the price of our products so that the shopkeeper could make his
usual 33.1/3% retailer's profit, the wholesaler 20%, and we, the makers,5%.
Things must have changed a lot if retailers can now sell with a 50% discount.

Markups can be up to 300% of manufacturers cost price for retail.

Lidl seem to have got the message. Lots of things were much cheaper today.
