How and when did you meet your best friend?

My mum died, as an alcoholic, Grumpy's best and oldest friend has that problem now. We've also lost quite a few very very good friends, because of their drinking.

When he died I only mentioned it in passing, it would have taken that whole big post above to explain who he was, and what he meant to me, and it hurt too much at the time.
I'd always referred to him, over the years from dm days, as best mate, but never gone into details.
He was clever, generous in the best possible way, so much fun, and such a good friend. So sad.
