Indeed! I was pretty cross about the interview thing, having been born here, and a tax payer and home owner I didn't see why it was necessary, but that is only for the first passport, you never have to do it again, thankfully.

It's happened to me too a few times. If you have to go off and look something up you find the dreaded "session has expired" notice and you have to start again. I got my new driving licence through the post just before we went on holiday. I hadn't realised you had to renew when you get to 70.

You don't just have to renew when you are 70 now.

If you get a picture license, you have to "renew" the picture every 10 years as it expires... There was quite a lot about it in the press a while back. I'm guessing there are a lot of people with invalid addresses on their licenses because they don't want a picture one which expires..
