Eat well for less, BBC1 tonight.

Give me a break - a big break!

Pick some complete idiots. Follow them round a supermarket in a fixed shopping expedition. Then when they buy crap (Surprise surprise!) challenge them to save some money. Not hard is it? Cheap programming.

However....... there are some things in the exercise that can be applauded.

Getting idiots to produce nutritional meals in minutes, and for pennies, has to be a good thing.

Calm down, sweetheart, it's only Greg Wally making more money from idiots.

But, are these people for real?

You know what, I think they are!

Frightening, isn't it?.

I caught the last 20 minutes of this last Sunday when I'd tuned in for the repeat of GBBO.

I couldn't believe how much money the family saved just by switching a few items and shopping a bit more sensibly.

A packet of grated cheese cost a fortune...why would you when it's so simple to quickly grate your own!

I know!!! I bought grated cheese for the first time last week - a massive bag of mature cheddar marked down to far less than half price as it was on its sell-by date. I stuck it in the freezer and we're using it bit by bit 8-) We had delicious cheese omelettes last night ;)

I am constantly amazed at how much money these people manage to spend, and waste, on food.

I caught a trailer of last week's couple who seemed addicted to BOGOF's.

I'll watch the repeat on Sunday before I watch the repeat of GBBO. :D :D

I really must start staying in on a Wednesday.

I do think that it is harder these days to know how to cook.

I was probably the last generation to grow up where it was more the norm for mum to either be at home or work part time. Therefore I was able to see her cooking and cook with her. I also had compulsory cookery classes all the way through school until I left.

After that the convenience food market grew because so many people were out at work and it was just easier to get something quick for dinner. So generations have grown up not seeing food be cooked and also not having cookery lessons at school (they stop now at the end of yr 9 unless they choose to do it for GCSE).

My kids never rarely come shopping with me - supermarkets are open at all hours now so they don't have to and of course I can do it online - so how are they to learn how to shop and budget if they aren't taught or shown?

The other thing of course is that all these BOGOFs and bargains are on convenience food and confectionery the majority of the time. Its not often you see them on fresh fruit and veg!

But I have to admit, some of the people on the programme are just plain stupid! Particularly the couple last night with the crisps! They both worked in the medical profession so they must have known that they were eating really unhealthily.
Life begins at the end of your comfort zone!
