We keep bank statements and credit card statements fo two years as well as Utility bills.
Keep receipts for shopping and check them against statements and then shred them.
Keep insurance documents. Have three separate ring folders, one for the car, one for the house and one for the travel insurance. Have others for alarm, central heating Private and Sate pensions and of course Income tax.
Am scanning a lot of information onto the computer and getting rid of a lot of paper. Will make less work when we pop off.

How long do I need to keep UK stuff for? I've got a whole concertina dedicated to UK and another to AUS. I'd dearly love to throw them.

Our NZ files are an absolute disgrace. Stuff (was going to use another s word) all over the place. I'm just itching to get in there and sort it out, but for now, I'm paralysed by procrastination.

Weka, depending on what it is, I think 5 years max. Obviously insurance docs for the duration of the policy. But most things you can new request copies anyway if needed or download online.

I do all of ours, in batches - often far too long left between batches but it does get done eventually.
We have almost everything in a bit metal box file, with hanging dividers, then I keep a separate big folder for receipts & guarantees, for larger purchases but also for things like kettles which have a habit of conking out around their guarantee expiry date ;) :)

Saundra especially in the evenings I often sit on the sofa with my kindle and come in and look but am too tired to log in and post - and I don't usually feel happy just replying to one post, so it's all or nothing xx

I think I will start putting mine on the computer, no real trouble to do each one as it comes.

As I mentioned earlier, really old stuff goes into the garage, but "current" stuff - up to 5 years - is filed in ring binders, upstairs in various bookcases. Both Mrs O and Master O leave all of that to me, utility bills, finances, insurance, title deeds, medical, wills, so on ........ I'm quite methodical, everything sectionalised, allocated and in its place ... but I've just this minute counted the number of ringbinders I've got. To my horror, I've counted ... 64!! :o :o

I refuse to go paperless as I don't trust either the computer system or any of the companies I have to deal with. In fact, I fought a two year war of attrition with BT who insisted that I should go paperless, and regularly kept on turning me paperless unless I logged on and turned myself back

I hope they've now got the message and given up ....

Still it is Saturday night

I was one.

I looked in then realised it was a job I had been avoiding for weeks. Now you have reminded me I will have to sort it tomorrow... or later. ;)

You see Saundra? You make people move - that's even better than a reply ;)

Di - I am the same, do a lot all at once, same for shredding. Until such time as they get done, the papers sit on top of our red metal 'filing cabinet' in his wardrobe!

Ossie - 64?????
