He was at St. Andrews late 1960's and early 1970's, a superb old-fashioned winger, ferocious tackler in midfield, and cult hero to us young lads! At the same time, Birmingham City's established keeper was a certain Jim Herriot, who in himself was an absolute case. I can recall even now seeing Herriot on the edge of the penalty area calmly letting a long shot go past him, turning round, and without blinking an eye, catching it as it cannoned back off the crossbar ....
And the vet who wrote "All Creatures Great and Small", a certain Alf Wight, adopted James Herriot as his pen-name. According to Wiki:
Wight needed a pen-name to comply with professional rules banning advertising and chose Jim Herriot's name after seeing him play exceptionally well for Birmingham City in a televised match against Manchester United.
