Needless to say it was never replaced, but I did keep the box on the outside as a potential deterrent. I think a lot of people do that, or at least have one real one on the back of the house, say, and a dummy at the front, depending where's vulnerable.
Round here, we're getting increasingly prone to power cuts. When we get one, every third alarm in the neighbourhood starts shrieking. At night, if it's pitch black, you look out and see flickering candles and torches in houses, and the cacophony of sound makes it seem like it's the End of the World .... and I suspect with the projected national electricity supply shortages, it's something that's only going to get more frequent.
