...after dinner in the living room on the middle floor. Tom and Billy were also in the room and Joe was on the top floor with his XBox. Suddenly there was an almighty bang downstairs.
This is what we found in the kitchen


It's the glass worktop saver, or rather it was It shattered just like that, there was plenty more glass all around the kitchen. I'm just relieved that none of us were in there when it happened. I hadn't used it since making a roll at lunchtime so it wasn't hot from having a pan on it. I certainly won't be replacing it.

Good grief, how dangerous is that. What a good job you weren't anywhere near.

I have a small one of those but I use it to stand the water filter jug on it.

They are supposed to be toughened glass.

Funnily enough I just searched to see if this is 'normal' and all I could find was a list of eleven reviews for Lakeland's clear glass saver (it's not from Lakeland, I think it was from Dunelm) and one person had bought three and two had shattered, another had put her's in water to clean it and that had gone too, someone had one shatter on them when they put a roasting pan on their's - they're supposed to be heat resistant to 280C.

That is weird, because the same thing happened to my stepmother's. At the time she was sure Dad must have dropped something on it, and he swore he hadn't
I have two, one with the kettle on, and the other gets used for all sorts, both have been in the kitchen over 5 years with no mishaps. The glass is meant to be safe, but I wouldn't want it all over the place either.

Just thought, was it one of those that looks a bit sort of bubbly, or just flat? Mine are flat, s/mother's was a bubbly one.

We always put a cork mat on ours before we put on anything hot.

You were lucky not to be near it when it shattered, It could have been nasty.

I had one with a nice picture of a cheese board showing through, and tiny rubber feet at the corners.

It went when I was using it, but because of the picture stuck on the back it just crazed like a windscreen. Never again.

You were lucky nobody was about when that happened Jo.
