Rotorua to Auckland

Postby Weka » 10 Aug 2015, 07:03

It was an interesting trip yesterday
In the morning we went to rainbow valley where there are exciting things like rainbow trout and birds to look at, and the log flume ride. FIL was still to sick to join us, so he sat beside the fire in the gift shop while we walked around and then joined us in the cafe for lunch. The have a log flume ride there as well which Sasha and I loved, Oliver wasn't that keen on, but too his credit went on twice, just to see if it was as scary the second time.

Then we got petrol, and narrowly missed being caught up in this....

And off home we tootled. It's a shame, cause I would have loved to have seen that.

The journey home was interesting though

It was about 2" deep in places!

We left about 2:30, it's normally a 3.5 hour drive, by the time we dropped the in laws and their car off, we got home just on 7.

Oh, and guess who has been home sick from school today? Been to the doctor this morning, and that now makes 4 antibiotic doses in 5 weeks.

Sounds like a great trip overall :)

I tried to find out all I could about Rotorua when I was about 12 or 13. I bought a beaded belt at the scouts jumble sale and Rotorua was spelt out in the beads :)
It was hard though, obviously in those days it was what books we had plus the library - I spent hours in the library anyway so it was good to have my own little project to work on :)
Never did find a lot but it kept me occupied :D
Don't know what happened to the belt, I do know I still wore it when I was first working in London which was when I was 18, and I remember finding it a few years later and being amazed at how tiny it was :D

Vic, yes, it's in a service lane right behind a restaurant and a supermarket, right in the cbd area.

Di, I wonder if you came across Mt Tarawera in your library project? There were the Pink and White terraces there, I think they were the 8th wonder of the world, and then in 1886 the mountain erupted and blew the terraces to smithereens. The eruption buried a village as well, and today there are bits excavated so you can look at it, but we decided to save that till Oliver is older. Auckland has 50+ volcanoes in the area, so I can just imagine oliver going, "so these houses were buried by the ash from a volcano, and our house has volcanoes around it..... Mummy, is our house going to get buried and are we going to die?" he's very literal.

That geyser :o ...... crickey, I wouldn't fancy living round there. Presumably any old geo-thermal bore-hole could blow anytime?

I presume so. It's funny how comfortable you get with danger. I had Sasha and Oliver running around Hells gate right next to 100c pools, if they fell in.... Let's not think that.... And there was nothing more than a small ankle high log separating the path from certain death.
(Well they didn't actually run around, but they did wander off up ahead at times, or hang back to look at something)

A lot of the homes are heated be the geothermal bores. Right now I'm wishing ours was too.... It's cold here tonight and we have no central heating only a small oil heater and a tiny panel heater in each bedroom.
