Is windows10 too good?

I'm reading the press about W10 and I've so far read two bad things.

1. someone kept his porn in his Pictures folder and W10 helpfully displayed it on the screensaver by default...
2. W10 does not play DVD's so you either buy the capability from MS or download an app

The second article is simply old news. Neither did W8 and that theme is continued. The answer is really simple. download VLC media player and use that. It's really excellent. The article did say that too but the title was misleading. I've been using VLC for years now and for a free app which is 28mbytes, it's absolutely excellent. It plays DVD's and Blu Ray without issue. Plus almost every downloaded media file I've ever tried running on it.

So I wonder. Is W10 better than expected. Within 24 hours there were 67 million installs. OK there were issues and continue to be issues. But, in general, it's been pretty good.

Losing media playing from W10 is no deal breaker. Windows Media Player and Windows Media Centre were bloated and not that good.

And as you say there are loads of free DVD/Blu-ray players out there, VLC being one.

Have got 10 but now all efforts to make the scanner work have failed HELP :( . It was fine with 7 and I need it badly. No porn by the way.
It prints files OK and copies quite normally but I suppose 10 has wiped the software.

What's the scanner?

It may have wiped the scanning software. It will uninstall anything that it does not support and will only warn if it can't uninstall without action.

What is the model again?

A bit late but...

NOTE on preserving your programs and files:
If you are currently using Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 SP0 or Windows 8 (not 8.1), then Windows 10 upgrade will erase all your program and files (see Microsoft Windows 10 Specifications).

Hmmm, I updated from W7 Sp1 so there was no issue. My W8 are all 8.1 so no issue there either. But if anyone has not updated their W7 with SP1, then they're going to be in for a surprise.

I can't find a list of programs or drivers which will be removed. I noticed that W8 created a list of removed programs when it was installed and when I refreshed, but I can't find any equivalent for W10...

I am going to hold off for a while.

My Brother DCP All-in-one only gets "basic functions" according to Brother, but no details of what they are.

And my Canon camera has no updates as yet. The site only says this and that "might not" be needed.

At the moment I am not in the market for new versions of either.

I came across this with an office HP colour laser at the offices I worked at in Sweden. I moved to W7 x64 and the printer would only print, not scan.

In the end I sovled it with a WindowsXP VM in which I dropped the drives and I used to run up the VM and do the scanning from there. OK that one was networking but USB passthru is the same.

I've been pleasantly surprised with the stability and capability of VirtualBox this last time I tried it and that's free.

It's even possible you could do the same from a Linux VM which would leave you supported, quick to boot and still have SMB connectivity to the laptop.

Just some options. I'm sure I'm going to wind up there myself yet.

Printer is HP Photomart 5520 but am considering going back to W7 as I have a restore disc and wonder if it is possible.

The full suite of software is here. It supports W8 too so should install for W10.

If that works then no need to uninstall.

The 10 upgrade should have a backout option to exit the 10 install if you need it.
