Moving to Windows 10 resets your default Browser

Be warned, you'll probably find it easier to reinstall your favourite browser and set it as default than to try and make this change in Windows 10 yourself. As the deal with the EU has now expired, MS is under no obligation to make this easy for you. Because Microsoft now has less than 50% of the Browser market, the EU won't be able to pull that trick again either....

Personally I won't be using Edge as it is one of those "metro" apps, now being called "The modern UI" apps.

I have my own name for these Windows8 apps. Crapps. Because they almost all are.

So if you don't use IE and don't want to use Edge, then reinstall your browser of choice. If you use IE, then the old IE is still there, you'll need to go find it and stick it on the desktop and the task bar.

I've only upgraded one machine to 10 so far. It went pretty smoothly and actually kept more of my apps than prior Windows8 "refreshes" did. I'll be upgrading others as time goes on, including my main laptop. But I need to get my virtual server mess sorted out before that. I'm almost at the data extracted stage. Then I'll have to rebuild it and copy all the data back... Then back it all up properly.

At least another 2 weeks before I can really focus on Windows 10...

Remember my post about Windows update? Well IE11 is now playing up. Pages are slow to load, it freezes, my mouse does not work....

I have tried everything I can think of - reset, virus scans, uninstall and reinstall, DNS, registry - and it is only partly better.

I am going to wait for W10 to download and see what happens. If it is no better I will do a clean install of W7 and then be very careful of what Microsoft wants to update.

Firefox and my Chrome clone are fine, but I prefer IE.

My VM is borked. W10 upgrade did not fix it, I'm pretty sure the certificate store was patched. So 10 is not upgrading everything. Which is both good and bad.

My IE11 is fine and I've been doing full updates but most of my machines are now 8. My home desktop is offline due to a major storm so I can't check.

My VM is OK, but it is on a partition protected by my 360 security.

I really cannot figure out the IE 11 problem. All other browsers are fine. My router DMZ, and I rebooted it, is intact, but something in Win Updates must have changed things.

My phone and tablet, both W8.1, are fine even after updates.

I am going to do a clean install once I have moved all my private stuff to a partition and then be very careful with the updates. I am sure they are the problem.

BTW I have the W10 notification on my taskbar. It tells me that Microsoft is validating my PC and that I will be notified when my download is ready. It has been there since last Thursday... any ideas about what is going on Suff?

They're balancing the load on the servers and also balancing the load for the helpdesks. Did you open it and ask to schedule an update? I hadn't bothered so it just sat there like an ornament...

When it's downloading there will be a couple of hidden $Windowsxx.~xx in your C drive.

Or you could just download the tool and build your own media. The tool offers iso which is good for VM's and usb which is good for physical.
