Do you have art work up on your walls?

Postby debih » 24 Jul 2015, 14:20

Just thinking about this whilst posting about the new print I've bought.

In the lounge we have - Audrey, a canvas (which is actually 3 canvas's that make one picture) of earth as seen from space by a local artist, a canvas of a modern art dog done by another local artist and a print of penguins (which I hate and am hoping to get rid of when we decorate). We have family photos in frames on the sideboard and a big mirror above the mantelpiece.

In the hall we have a framed photo of my grandparents and a really long but narrow print we had made from some photos Mick took of the base in Antarctica that he was on that show a 360 degree view.

In the dining room we have a big mirror above the fireplace, family photos on the dresser, a print of some boats that we bought at Loch Ness, a print we bought in Greece of our favourite fishing village, a print we bought in Portugal of our favourite square to sit and watch the world go by and a print my Nan bought me which shows the bridge over the river in our village.

Upstairs landing we have four framed photos I bought at an auction showing the village high street in olden days.

In our bedroom I have framed photos of the girls when they were little and a sketch drawing of the girls that my sister had done.

I'm on the look out for something to go above the loo now - a typical Cornish scene I think.

We don't have anything going up the stairs - yet. I shall start dropping hints about some Leigh Lambert prints after Micks birthday I think.

Oh, I forgot the map of the world poster at the top of the stairs.

It's seen better days but it'll do for now.

When the hall, stairs and landing gets decorated (hopefully next year) I want to get a framed map.

Yes, some .... actually all by artists we've, at some time or other, met!

An original Pascale Bigot in the bedroom, very similar in style to the painting she's holding in this article ...

An original R. Heywood Coyle landscape in the living room, not unlike the "Belbroughton" in this link:

.... and down the stairwell, a series of Terry Whitworth cartoon-style sketches involving sheep and famous Dorset locations ....

We do, although not as much as I'd like and not all of it what I'd choose now ;)

In the hall by the front door is a small framed print of one of the river pontoons with some of the Isle of Wight in the background. It's by a (late) local artist and I bought it at a boot sale.
In here is a large limited edition print of the view we used to have as soon as we stepped out of Bb's flat, the line of coast and Hengistbury Head; I bought it with my 10-year service award from work :)
The dining end, there's a l/edition print of a pair of kingfishers; I bought it for the ex and he made me take it. It's quite nice and suits the room but I should get rid of it.
At the top of the stairs is a little watercolour I bought in Fowey in about 1980, it's of one of the little jumbly streets there :)
Oh there are some of my photos framed too; in the kitchen is one of flowers planted in tins in Greece, and a similar one upstairs in 'my' room.
Up there is also a mirror with a frame that I decorated with shells, I guess that's artwork :)
And in the hall on the way to the kitchen is a large print that was my mum's and hung above the fireplace; it's flowers, I do like it and that bit of hall is dark so it brightens it up. I have practically nothing of Mums' so it's nice to have.

And there's a picture on the floor in the hall waiting for me to decide where to put it :)

We have three large framed Tissot prints in our lounge. We chose them a few years ago to go with the decor.

Since we moved here, we want to keep the walls fairly clear, so we have chosen carefully what we wanted to put up.

In the downstairs living room, we have a painting of this building done in 1978, a charcoal and watercolour picture of the harbour done in 1979, both by the same artist. There are three framed photos of us taken on our first cruise. There is also a large framed print of The Little Street by Vermeer and a framed poster of St Andrews golf course, which Miss Osc and hubby gave us the Christmas after we all were there for Mr Osc's 60th. On the piano is a small framed print by Marc Chagall, Bible: David and Bathshebee. In the downstairs bedroom, there are two photo collages, Miss Osc did one of herself and her dad for his 50th and one of herself and myself for my 60th.

On the stairs there is a small mask from Venice which we bought there many years ago, and a frame with three photos of lions and water buffalo that Mr Osc took in Kenya.

In our main living room, we have a limited edition print done by SIL's uncle, which is of a lot of the view you can see if you turn your head to the left and look out the window while standing in front of the print. Also this limited edition print which my sister gave us for our 40th anniversary and I love it https://annanielsen.com/p/anniversary_waltz__series_1 We feel we would like something big for the fireplace wall but will bide our time until we see something we want.

In our bedroom, we have a New York poster over our bed, and also a print of two old boots by Vincent van Gogh that we bought in the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.

Quite a lot when I list them (and quite a few more in the attic). On a similar discussion on another forum, someone expressed the opinion that there was no point in having prints, far better to have the original. I thought this was a very art snob remark (and I said so ;) ).

Oh and there is a little print we got on holiday of the street that had our favourite icecream shop   , not decided where to hang it yet.

I have few prints of wildlife and one of a Quincaillerie, but my favourite is a blueprint of Concorde - the plane.

I also have a massive blueprint of Titanic, but it is rolled up in a tube - too big to hang here.

That really is an awful snobbish remark Osc! The print we have of Hengistbury Head was quite expensive, but the original was completely out of reach. There's a vast difference between 'proper' prints and the kind you used to get in Athena ;)
