Mary Berry and me

Postby lissie » 30 Jan 2013, 10:42

I was watching the Mary Berry story last night and thoroughly enjoyed it
In a way my life was similar in the beginning.
My Mum and Gran were good cooks and i watched them and was able to cook
quite well when 9 or 10 years old.
She caught Polio and was in hospital a long time.
I got TB and was laid up for a year :(
When she went to work she demonstrated how to use electric cookers.
I used to demonstrate the use of Aga Cookers :)
She managed to get someone to finance her to get to France to study cookery.
I wanted to go to catering college (and had passed all the necessary exams) but my
father said they could`nt afford it and i should get a job to help the family finances :(
There ended the similarities :D :D

Yes youngsters nowadays have such choices, careers that were beyond the wildest dreams of my parents - who both left school at barely 15 to bring in money. University was beyind their wildest dreams and my sister and I grew up in a council house and yet my niece and nephew have both been to uni, niece has a blossoming career behind the scenes in TV, nephew wanting to be a lawyer, my daughter wanting to be an animal conservationist, travelling the world.................. :)

They are so very lucky these days in that way :)
