Free upgrade to Windows 10?

For all those techno questions

The main salient point is that the W10 upgrade comes free for the first year.

If you don't do it within the first year you need to buy it.

One point I don't know about is whether you can do a 32 bit W7 to 64 bit W10 upgrade. Because eventually they will drop 32 bit in W10 and you will wind up having to pay for it instead of just upgrading to the next 64 bit version.

Nobody is talking about that and it's important because 32/64 switch is not an upgrade, it's a full reinstall.

For those who are interested, a picture or two.

Windows Explorer

Image

The start menu before I played with it, but after I've removed all the live tile garbage but the two I have on the right. The right I can't resize.

Image

The start menu after I've played with it a bit. That's IE in the background

Image

And this sack of manure is the Microsoft Edge browser currently called project Spartan. I've enabled the favourites hub but I can't either resize it or move it to the other side...

Image

Other things I have done are to disable the full W8 style start menu, added the quick launch bar to the bottom of the start bar and added my More Icons folder on the desktop as a start bar folder.

It is very windows8 ish. I don't have a touch interface so I can't play with that and I won't put my phone on Windows 10 until it ships production. The start menu is garbage and if I was able to detach the keyboard and make it like a tablet it would go into all full screen W8 mode which I hate.

I don't like the flat, non tactile interface or the Windows3.1 styling. It's just crap and Microsoft needs to get a clue.

However it is what we have and it will become the mainstream OS in about 4 years. We can get it free for 1 year. So many of us may want to go there.

Oh and that "search the web and windows" bit at the bottom left? That's where Cortana lives. I think, can't remember, that I have disabled it and that is where it will remain. Disabled... I don't need to talk to my pc and I certainly don't need it to know about my daily life so that Microsoft can mine my life for "opportunities"....
