Project Fish has started

Last year October I rescued four goldfish from Freecycle. The poor things were kept in a far too small tank and the deal was always going to be that when the time was right I'd release them into my pond. Unfortunately though when I got them the temperatures were already dropping steadily and it was too late in the year; so I ended up buying a larger tank for them (still way way too small in all honesty) and set them up in my lounge.

Ideally it should be a bit warmer outside before I release them but they just really do need more space so yesterday I started the process; with the aim to move them on Sunday. So all this week, starting last night; I'll be doing partial water changes; exchanging some of their tank water with pond water so come Sunday the water in the tank will hopefully be the same as in the pond and then come Sunday it'll be freedom day  I just need to make sure I find a large enough grid to go over the pond so the cats / heron can't get at them as they are so much brighter than the two shibunkins and three brown gold fish I have in there at the moment. Thankfully the pond lily is coming along nicely so that will provide some shelter as well.

It will be odd not having the foursome in the lounge any more; I've grown quite attached to them - but they will be so much happier in the larger pond

LOL Manxie - Dare I admit that I probably will miss talking to them, they actually are interesting fish to keep (just a lot of hard work and they need huge big tanks, not the small ones everyone seems to put them into) .

and it's done

Yesterday, Kurt, Wanda and Goldie with their little friend Boris were released into the pond - so much more space for them. A lot of mad swimming around by them and the four or five existing fish but hopefully they'll all settle and behave.

But best news ever is that yesterday as I was checking out the best place to put the plastic tub that was to house the fish for a few hours I saw two small newts. And my resident frog made an appearance as well. Just hope that the four released fish keep well away from the newts - the existing ones seem to just leave them but I have heard tell that apparently goldfish aren't ideal for wildlife ponds as they'll eat anything that'll fit in their mouth :?

The tank in the lounge has been cleaned out and re filled with fresh water and is up and running again and next week the tropical fish that I have in the dining / kitchen area will move into the new tank and I can get rid of the old one.

I'm happy :D

No wonder you are happy, Ria.

You have quite menagerie there with the cats, hedgehogs, newts, frogs, fish and foxes.

Will your trail cam be able to watch over the pond just to see how things are getting on?
