Not sure what is going on with new computer

Postby medsec222 » 06 Jun 2015, 07:42

May be a computer techie has got the answer to this. I have a new computer with Windows 8. It is constantly freezing and telling me there is a problem with internet explorer. Sometimes this lasts a few seconds and seems to right itself and at other times it freezes completely and I have to re-start the computer. This happens constantly throughout the day. Any ideas as to how I can rectify this?

Meds, I gave up on W8 because of all the problems on my laptop and went back to W7.

However, the link here gives some of Microsoft's solutions to your problem so you could try one or all.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/inte ... e-11-win-7

Then again you might want to go the whole hog and do the upgrade to W8.1, you might even be prompted to do so. The tutorial here should help.

I've been running Windows8 on my laptop for quite some time now. The only times I've ever seen it freeze like that is when the hard drive is failing. I've had to repair it twice now and I'm going to get a new SSD to replace the 2.5 year old one which seems to be done.

Personally I'd go look in the error log first as this is the most likely place to find what is causing the freezing.

Press the windows key and R together to get the run window.

In the run window type

mmc c:\windows\system32\compmgmt.msc

Click on OK.

In the computer management console open the event viewer (Click on the triangle on it's side next to it, it will roll over and open the tree, turning black in the process), open Windows Logs the same way.

Click on System.

You are looking for events which have a yellow triangle or a red circle. You can read the error messages if you get one.

If you see nothing in system, you could also try looking in the Application one, but I find that it's usually system.

Here is an example from my computer with the problem I'm having with the C drive highlighted.

The reason I suggest using the winkey+r combination is that in W8 Microsoft have made it damned hard to get to computer management and this is the fastest way I can think of getting there.

Just as a thought, which explorer are you using? The so called modern UI one that takes over all the screen and has to scroll bars or the normal windows one you get to from the normal windows desktop??

Thanks for your tips guys. I find computer technology baffling and scary! I am using Internet Explorer which I need to use because it supports work I do from home. I will study all the information I have been given.

Sorry was not clear.

In W8 there are two explorers. One you get from the start page

The other you get from the desktop as usual.

As you can see they are quite different to work with and use. I've also seen them work differently. I _never_ use the so called ModernUI version unless I'm on a windows phone where I have no choice...

I get internet explorer from my desktop - the taskbar at the bottom has the icon, which I click on to.
