It's always sad to chop down a tree and my heart goes out to the many birds that no doubt would be using them for shelter but in your situation Lissie I'd get those chopped asap

Trees are lovely, but as mentioned they can prove a nuisance, especially in the smaller gardens where they block sunlight and, even worse, can affect the foundations of the house

Hope today goes smoothly Lissie, and that you can get a decent price for those others, as they might well be causing structural problems!

That is that job done
The tree surgeon looked at the big trees and said they
are healthy and not doing any harm and suggests that he
cuts them down by a third. I have also asked him to fell
a large Ash tree as it causes so much mess when the leaves
fall.
He is going to send me an estimate and we will decide then.
I hope the neighbours are satisfied now as i think it looks awful
just bare trunks. Tony (the tree man) says he hates cutting them
so short as he prefers to keep some foliage. Now we can see right
into their bedroom windows (good job she is middle aged as i would
have to keep an eye on Don with his telescope )

Much safer though - what about if it got windy enough to blow trees down? Or ashas been mentioned, the roots can damage house founds.

I had the most beautiful black leaved tree with pink flowers right next to the conservatory (tree had been planted before conservatory was built) but it had to go....it was literally so close to the house it was in danger of falling right on top of the conservatory in a gale

When we had our trees trimmed, the tree surgeon discovered that our two beautiful silver birches at the side of the house had a horrid fungus growing inside, all the way down the trunks So they had to be cut down, which was a shame as they were gorgeous, but as he said they were very close to the side of the house and might well have been a problem with the foundations at some point!

I think part of the problem is the much smaller gardens in the newer houses like ours - the landscapers that the builders employ want to plant trees to make things look nice, but they end up being an issue

Wow, Lissie, that looks like a rain forest. A neighbour at the back here has them right across his garden but has them cut every year and they now have a nice flat top about 9 feet high.

That's a bit odd Lissie; I'd have thought you'd still have some foilage on the top of them? If it's only the bare trunks left then why not have those removed and replant something else that won't be quite so big / invasive but still give privacy?
