Shiny is good.
If you do oven-roast chestnuts at any time, always remember that they must be pierced first.
A friend of ours once forgot, and when they all exploded, virtually simultaneously, it was like a World War II gun barrage in the kitchen!!!
Weka, we buy bags of chestnuts for Christmas from the supermarkets, around 30 or 40 nuts at a time, probably. Sometimes you can buy small packets of freshly roasted chestnuts from street vendors who operate those small mobile ovens, just like you can buy baked potatoes, although you don't see so much of that on the streets these days.
We can also get tinned shelled chestnuts at Christmastime; we use them as a side-dish with the Christmas turkey (although they aren't quite as nice as fresh ones).
