What else can I do to prep the car for its MOT tomorrow?

Postby meriad » 28 Apr 2015, 13:10

My car is going for it's MOT tomorrow . I'm really hoping it goes through without any major issues as I'm looking to get a new one later this year.... just thinking of what I can do to make sure the smaller areas definitely pass.

So tonight after work, I'm replacing the wiper blades tonight, topping up screen wash and making sure tyre pressure is OK. Is there anything else I could be doing? I'll be at Halfords for the wiper blades and would rather spend a bit more money there if need be. I'll ask the person fitting the blades to do a quick check with me that the various lights are all working, esp the ones at the back that I can't see.

Anything else anyone can think of? thank you!

Ria, apart from what you are doing and maybe checking the radiator and brake fluid levels are where they should be I do not think that there is much more you can do except for a quick tug on the seat belts and making sure the interior lights are working. You could also give the tyres a look over, especially the spare - make sure it is inflated.

It is too late to be doing anything major mechanical/electrical and anyway they would probably be beyond a quick roadside fix.

Fingers crossed it goes OK. xx

Seatbelts I can do - thanks. Radiator and brake fluid I'll ask the guy at Halfords shall I

Tyres are all fairly new - so hopefully they'll be fine

sigh - looking forward to this time tomorrow and hopefully it's all done.

Meriad.
There is a web site which tells you what is checked on an MOT.
It is a long list and to the none technical it can look frightening. It includes new items such as tyre pressure warning lights which are now fitted to new cars. Just one not working will mean a fail.
The spare tyre is not normally included in the MOT unless it is not roadworthy,
My car is going for its MOT next month. Had a new rear wiper blade fitted by a local car spares shop. Halfords charge for replacing bulbs and wiper blades.
Hope tour car passes without any major problems
When are you having it serviced.

In all honesty Cruiser I haven't had my car serviced regularly for a while now.

Last time it went it for something was in December last year because the coil and lead needed replacing. I think that before then it would have been earlier that year for a mini service but I'm really not certain.

I know last year the car failed the MOT because a breakpipe was bulging so they were replaced for that but it passed everything else.

Coincidentally, ours went in for the MOT and a standard annual service today! I'd previously noticed all 3 wiper blades (front and back) had split this winter, so I had them replaced about a month ago.

The car passed the MOT with no problems, but although it's a relatively low mileage, it is 6 years old, and I've had an advisory that the silencer box is getting corroded, so that will have to be replaced sometime soon.

Good luck with yours tomorrow, meriad !
