The Chilli Shop. http://chilli-shop.co.uk/

It has just opened in Leeds so I called in earlier today to see what they had in as I noticed some plants in the window. So I was scouting around when I heard this scream..... like a banshee scream. :o

There at this table, 'The Challenge Table', was a young girl from Mauritius and she had just tried the 12 million Scoville challenge. For those who do not know, the Scoville scale measures the "heat" of a chilli, and the ones you get at the local curry house are about 100,000 or 500,000 units for an extremely hot Vindaloo.... so imagine: 12 million!

Here is a video of a guy who tried 3million..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slRl2rrrF20

BTW I got some Trinidad Scorpion chillies.... only 2 million Scovilles. My lips are still numb from the flake about the size of a grain of salt I had about 20 minutes ago.

I love chillies, all kinds, but don't really understand the need to prove you can eat the hottest - been caught out a few times though :D

Saundra..... you're a wimp. ;)

Ossie, the scale works on the drops of water (liquid) need to neutralise the heat of the chilli. So, 2M Scovilles = 2M drops of water per one drop of chilli oil. I would need a lager lake if I used them to cook with! Dive in.

Di, I bought these to make a muscle rub, not for eating. They are insanely hot and deffo not for cooking use. I love chillies and hot food, but even I cannot think of a meal where they would be in the recipe. :o

:o   :o :? :? Careful Frank - you could end up being arrested!

I'm growing three different chilli's this year

Paper Lantern which has a Scoville rating of 350,000 - 400,000 (apparently very hot)
Joe's Super Long - Scoville rating of a mere 15,000 - 20,000
Chenzo - Scoville rating of 45,000

there is another plant in there growing from last years plant (I cut it back to throw away but leaves have sprouted from the base). I think it's Chilli Apache which has a rating of 70,00 - 80,00 and I thought they were quite hot - which means I'm in for a BIG surprise when I use any of the Paper Lantern ones... definitely to be handled with gloves I suspect - oops
