This is turning out to be an interesting multi-layered drama.

The apparent brutality of the first episode has changed to the intrigues used by the convicts, ordinary soldiers and the officer classes to allow them all to co-exist in a state of relative peace in order to survive what must have been Hell on Earth.

It has developed nicely.

We are still watching it, even if some bits do jar, including the shining white teeth and some rather modern language. The most recent episode made me think about how so many of the convicts were not common criminals but had been people just trying to get by however they could. It would make sense for those with a talent, or drive to make life better, to seize opportunities presented to them. I do like the governor's character.

Language in period dramas will always be a problem. When I listen to historians reading from letters and papers of those times it is hard to make sense of some of it without concentrating really hard, (not my strong point) or having sub-titles.
