Winamp is back!

For all those techno questions

Very close in the music department I guess we noticed that before.

Yes I guess I'm breaking the way winamp works. However Media Monkey doesn't mind. As I usually have the power to run it, I can stick with it.

Not to worry, it was worth a try. As a stand-alone player it still works.

I am a bit busy for a few days, but when things calm down I will have a look at the various playlist plug-ins to see if there is a solution.

Bearing mind Winamp is/was a dedicated music player, first and foremost, the media library problems are no surprise, and that depends on how your music is set up.

I looked at the plug-in and it is not configurable, unlike the old days. The only thing I found was in Preferences. Under the Media Library heading there are options for the local library to watch folders, and they have to be added manually. That could be a bit of a chore. When I tried Media Monkey it searched for everything when it installed, so automatically knew where the different music folders/files were.

Anyway, each to their own, and worth a try. Anything other than WMP or WMC has to be a good thing.

As do I. I know that many of these things started out as a Thesis for Computer Graduates (Linus Torvalds and Linux), but it is the perseverance and ongoing effort into something which, after all, does not return any direct material gain. Although I notice many of them now have a donate button.

Winamp will be perfect for most. For me, however, who is a fanatical hierarchical storage geek, it just won't do. Sadly. Even my movies are stored in Moves\1-c\[movie name] movies\d-h etc.

Can you imagine what these stupid arrays of pictures like WMC look like with 1,000 movies on it, most of which do not have pictures and no title....... I'm sure the people who write this software don't actually work out how much time you need to invest to sort every single track the way they want you to work. When directory storage is available, simple and quick. It is odd the way that computer programs are being made to force us to do work. When, in fact, they should be doing the opposite.

I will let you know how my Raspberry Pi 2 goes with Kodi 14 when I finally get it.... I want it to be able to play music from cascaded directory playlists and most cheap media players can't. The pi, in this configuration, delivered, was £50

Ah but......

The beauty of my less fanatical approach to the order of the universe works for me. :o ;)

Take my Beach Boys tracks. They are all by the Beach Boys so that is the first part of their record, then the track titles go from 4th of July to Wouldn't it be nice. Nothing else is needed.

Beach Boys - 4th of July
.........................................
Beach Boys - Wouldn't it be nice?

All in one folder, which also has

Abba - Andante
........................................
Abba - You owe me one

and many others,

Everything alphabetically ordered in one huge folder by Explorer.

I do not mind donating and often do.

I have a usb TV dongle for when I was travelling. It works just about anywhere, but the TV software to view programmes was absolute rubbish. I tried Total Media and Blaze and all sorts of other things...... enter DVB Viewer. Free trial, then donationware. It will work in limited fashion as a freeware. €12.00 later and I have a quick to load and lightweight TV viewer on my laptop. I can have one main screen or as many pip-in-pic channels as I want - click on one and it becomes the main channel, click back and the mosaic is there. Bart, the man who keeps it going, sends me e-mail when he has an upgrade or a new function, and they are all free - forever.
