Why, why why?????

Postby miasmum » 18 Jan 2015, 16:15

Do adults feel the need to talk like kids?

I have just read this on my nephews page:

Well I luvs ya, like my own. I just wanna say you gotta be the best thing that 'appened to 'im. Luvs ya girl

That is from my brother in law aged 56 to his sons fiancé

Pathetic......

and now on Facebook from a woman I was at school with, so 53 with two teenage daughters

Great night, but why didn't anyone tell me wine, ouzo and malibu wouldn't mix? Spent all day washing the car and clothing thanks to that. Brilliant night though.

Sorry but people like that just make me ashamed

With younger generations, there is certainly a tendency to be slip-shod
when it comes to speech.

I blame this partly on the education system now in vogue, and partly on the
wide-spread use by the young of mobile phones for sending text messages.
It seems a great pity that our wonderful English language is being so abused,
but I don't see we can do anything about it.

Aggers I completely agree with you, which is why I feel so strongly that 56 year old fathers should write properly

If I am with my son or daughter in person and being relaxed say, in the park or at the beach, we will do high-fives and say things like "way to go" but not if we are just out shopping or walking the dogs. The problem is recognising when it is OK to be silly or childish.

Children of all generations have always had their own 'language' as have the forces and other occupations, and some of their words have percolated up into 'proper' English: that will never stop.

And why should a 53 year old need to share her erm, out-pourings

When I was as ill as that - once and never again - I was so ashamed, I'«m still blushing thinking about it.

A "word" which seems to get used by all ages and drives me to screaming point is "gawjus" :x
