In Leeds we get a black bin for general waste and a green bin for all recyclables except glass - they are emptied alternately every fortnight.. Brown bins for garden waste are optional and are emptied every fortnight from March to November. All of them are done as part of the normal council services, no extra payments.

Count yourself lucky, Rodo! The very final sack collection of green waste was scheduled here for the last Thursday in November. They didn't show. So it was down the tip whether you liked it or not. I would say we have a missed recycling or general waste collection at least once a month on average. Do you leave the stuff out and hope it will be collected next day? Big dilemma .....

One of our neighbours has the non-collection help-line at the City Council on speed-dial ...

Now, if, in future, they are going to invoke rules about "only putting your bins out after xx:xx and you must take them in by xx:xx or we'll fine you" (which I believe are coming as they trundle wheelie bins out across the city over the next 2 years or so), well then, they had better collect the rubbish on the day or peeps are going to get very cross ...

I can empathise with Kaz's annoyance because we've effectively gone from a free service to a £35/year service, and yes, I was peeved too! But we're not taking it up* (our decision) and the local council here are virtually bankrupt anyway, so I can understand why they are charging in a way. I believe council parking charges are going to go "through the roof" shortly too ....

* - being retired and having a recycling centre within a mile or so of the house were crucial factors - others aren't so lucky ....

I can understand you not taking it up Ossie, we decided to go with it as the garden recycling is on the other side of town

Ours is free, and so it should be since it's composted, bagged up and sold back to the council tax payers at the tip!

Since we moved here I've been very impressed with our new council though. The black general household waste bin was emptied weekly from early December until last week. Our last council stuck to fortnightly collections over the Christmas period and wouldn't take up any seperately bagged waste.

This council also take small electrical items and batteries on a fortnightly basis, you just put them in a carrier bag and leave them next to the recycling bin.

Our recycling box is collected every week, but they are very finicky about what they'll take - only glass, paper, thin cardboard, tins and clear plastics! Everything in the one box, and if the lid isn't on they won't take it!

Alternate weeks for the (charged for) green waste, and the black wheelie which is general household waste. Again if the lids aren't flat down they won't take it :|

We changed from a recycling box, with a net rather than a lid, to a wheelie bin last Spring Kaz. Our council were quite strict on what could be put into them but since changing to the bins that's all changed and there are loads more items that we can recycle in them now.
