The problem with a factory reset is that it usually wipes all your account data. If you don't know them or can't remember them it becomes a bit of a pain.

Otherwise everything should just default. You will, however, have to re-apply/install all the apps and packages. Which takes a while.

It worked just fine and I took the opportunity to set it up so that I am the owner. I bought it for my husband for his birthday and set it up with him as the owner, but he never uses it except to check his bank account. (I knew that would happen and I'd been wanting a tablet for a while . I keep all my account details, passwords etc in a password vault so I'll just set things up as I come to them. I took a photo of the screen so I would remember which apps were there, but I've only installed the ones I used frequently and ditched the dross.

Well done, Liz, it gives a good feeling when we get over the fear factor and things work out as they should. I hope it all works well now that YOU are in charge and not the tablet.

I was thinking of rooting my Sony Xperia now that the guarantee has expired, but I found that this little program, MyPhoneExplorer (freeware) can dig deep enough without having to. It found 129 apps on my phone and there were so many of them duplicating each others' work it was crazy; I mean, how many browsers do I need, not five!

Thanks gents. I feel like Bill Gates! I'll never be able to pluck up the courage to root my phone or tablet (can you root a tablet?) but I would love to be able to get rid of all the bloatware that comes ready installed and which can't be uninstalled.

Hi PP,

rooting your android device (tablet or phone), is nothing more than being able to log in as root (same as administrator in Windows), so that you can do administrative tasks like removing programs which run as root.

Sadly google and Samsung, the phone operators and all the others think that

A) you shouldn't have this right, they should be in charge of what you have on your device and what you can do
B) you will break stuff if they give you root access

I have some small sympathy with point B but absolutely none for point A.

When I replace my main phone, I'll root the Galaxy NoteII and get rid of all the extremely annoying Samsung garbage I don't use. That will make it faster, use less battery and be more usable...

The biggest problem with gaining root access to your phone is they have to hack the operating system to do so. Something which can seriously ruin your phones whole day....

Once I've done all of that, I'll expend some time working out how to customise my Windows phone rom to my requirements (Get rid of all the isp restrictions), then I'll flash it again...

My Samsung phone is full of pre-installed Samsung junk but I'm due an upgrade in a couple of months so there would be no point in taking any risks with it. The Nexus 10 is the same. I did ask the local computer shop guy, who is very good and has sorted out my laptop several times, if he would root my phone, but he said he wouldn't do it for someone else's phone, just his own.

Liz, try having a play with MyPhoneExploer, the link is in my other post. It works with Android devices, mainly phones, but it found my tablet and worked on that.

I've downloaded it Frank, and Myphoneexplorer client on my Nexus. It worked and it found my tablet, but I'm afraid I'm not much further forward as I don't have a clue how to use it now. I'll play around with it and see what I can find out.

Liz, if you have the Sidebar view you will see the different places in your phone or tablet: Contacts; Call Log; Organizer; Messages; Files (the place to be); Other.

The Call Log amazed me. I had calls missed, dialled, received gong back to the day I bought the phone.... all taking up space. Same with messages, page after page. However, Files is the place to go to get rid of junk. You can even get to the root folder. Mind you, before messing about in there do make a backup.
