I have to add to this by saying I grew up in Scotland and we went to school whether it was raining cats and dogs, freezing icy cold, hailstones, you name it..and as for snow. I remember we all just walked through deep snow to get to school..it never occured to anyone not to go!

Ok..we might have been a wee bit late..but we got there!

I remember being sent home from school when I was in the 3rd year of junior school so I would've been 9. There was no waiting for parents to collect us, we were just turned out in a really heavy blizzard where the snow was up to our knees - can you imagine the uproar if a school dared to do that now?

I can understand why Tom and Joe's school closed early as the roads here are atrocious. As I said earlier, it took John more than two hours to drive just over 10 miles and a friend has a 20 mile drive home and it took her over 3 hours.

When I went to school, I remember times when we had 12", 15" and even 18" of snow, and not one school was closed.

But then we all used to walk to school - and there was no obesity.

There's a lesson there, surely?

Oh not again! We always get this same subject whenever there is snow and some schools have to close because the teachers can't get there.

Joe came home after having a fun morning - a group of them had a snowball fight with some of the teachers who'd managed to get there. Teachers vs. pupils
It stands to reason that some aren't going to be able to make it into school, not all teachers live locally and within walking distance.

The schools really can't win. Our staff battled in this morning to make sure we were open only to be met with complaints from parents about opening - they wanted to keep their children off to play in the snow (some did!).

Erm excuse me. Its a Friday. Its a school day. The snow will be here over the weekend.

I know when Joe was at junior school I always used to take him on snowy days and once there were only around 50 in the whole school (it was nursery through to Year 6 with two classes of 30 per year so not a small school!) so they spent the day in the hall watching DVDs - he was really miffed that they hadn't been allowed to play out.

L was out all morning. Friday is outdoor learning day and the whole school was told to come dressed for the snow and that if they weren't properly dressed then they would have to stay inside.

They all turned up very appropriately dressed and spent from about 9.30am to 12pm outside, building igloos. They had a whale of a time.
