My broken foot.

Postby Workingman » 19 Nov 2014, 14:52

I was coming home from Leeds city centre and got stuck in a traffic jam due to the traffic lights at Sheepscar being on the blink. Cars were moving very slowly trying to get in and the problems cause huge tailbacks before and after interchange.

I managed to get through unscathed, but that was only to get to the back of very slow moving traffic on Meanwood road. I was slowly overtaking this queue, as another motorbike and a pushbike were doing. Suddenly a car indicated and pulled out - it was all one motion - and I was unlucky enough to be right alongside when it happened. I had seen the indicator as I was only a bike's length behind the car and I heard a man walking on the other side of the road say "No, no, no" but it was too late.

The car shoved me over and spun me round so that the car and I were on the wrong side of the road - facing traffic. To cut a longs story short, we collected all the bits up and checked the bike over. Many of the panels just shattered, they are plastic, but everything else was working. Me and the driver exchanged details and a woman in a car coming the opposite way. She, Sandra, had taken photos and has offered to be my witness. She saw everything and said straight away that the car driver was to blame.

I was feeling bit sore in my foot, knee and thumb so went to bed early. I did not sleep because of the pain in my foot and for a few times sat with it in a bowl if iced water. Come the morning I got a taxi to A&E at LGI where I spent most of the day in the system - X-rays were taken.

My thumb got over-extended, so no break. My knee is only bruised and grazed. However. I have broken two bones just behind the smallest toes and damaged the medial ligaments. There nothing much that can be done except to rest the foot and take pain killers. I do not have a cast because of the swelling, but I have to go to my GP in a few days to see how things are going.

It's all a bit of a bugger, as we say up here.

It's a lot of a bugger WM. What a darn nuisance. Are you putting in a claim?

Oh you poor thing WM, that sounds frightening as well as painful (((x)))

You know, you should claim.
Bb had the most piddlingly tiny 'accident' (it can't even be called that, he clipped the guy's back light) - and the bloke's claiming for not only the light but a whole rear panel - and whiplash!! Bb reckons he could only have been doing 10-15mph.
The insurance co are being brilliant and know he's swinging the lead but know from experience they're better off settling for the so-called injuries.
They're sending an engineer out to inspect both vehicles though - ours has just a little scuff, not even a teensy dent.

Your is a genuine injury and proper blame, you deserve it x

Oh, dear Frank. It is so annoying when some other driver's stupidity causes an accident.
That's the sort on accident that I dread, because you can be sure, in my case, someone
will say, "What can you expect, him driving at that age".

Hope you mend soon.

The driver, an older woman, was in a worse state than me suffering a bit of shock. It just so happened that I had bought a bottle of Bach Rescue Remedy, so I fed her a few drops.

She had seen a turning into a light industrial estate on the right and was going to use it to turn round and go back to find a less congested route to get home. She did indicate, but admitted that she did not turn to look at her blind spot - the place I was at. Had she done so I would have been easy to spot in my da-glo jacket with reflector stripes.

It was me who had to calm her down, and had she been alone I would not have let her go. Fortunately she had a passenger who promised to make her pull over if she started getting too nervous to carry on.

It is now up to the insurance companies to sort out, but I will not be claiming for a broken foot, it was an accident FCOL. The crash helmet is the only 'extra' to claim for. There is evidence that it saved me from a nasty bump to the head and it is SOP that once used it is never used again.

If everyone was like you I suspect our insurance rates would be a lot lower ;)

But just thinking Frank... do make sure that the insurance company at least are aware of your foot. Just in case (God forbid) there are any future problems resulting from this accident; at least then you hopefully would have something to fall back on if need be
