Shoot me down if you like......

Postby Osc » 25 Oct 2014, 17:46

....but why is everyone on SCD wearing poppies on the 25th October??? I thought Poppy Day was 11th November - in my opinion they seem to start wearing it earlier every year and it lessens the impact of the actual day. Don't shout at me telling what it represents because I do know, and I also wonder if people appearing on TV have a choice whether or not to wear it.

I won't shoot you down Rosie..... I haven't got a gun.

You are right, though, it seems that slebs and politicians are falling over themselves to be the first to be seen in public with a poppy. I find it patronising, to be honest, and I also agree that it diminishes the meaning behind the poppy. I seem to remember someone from TV land saying that it was something akin to 'poppy fascism' because they were forced to wear one.

When I was in the RAF we only wore them in the week of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice day, the 11th November - that was Sunday to Sunday with Armistice day in between.

I have noticed lots of people in shops wearing them.

Saying nothing, but I would never shoot you down Rosie :) I like you too much for that, and you are certainly entitled to your opinion 8-)

I'm sure that the BBC must buy the poppies in bulk and issue them to their staff.

That's, perhaps, understandable, but why do they have to start so early ?

Surely the first of November would be soon enough?

Yes, I thought the same, Osc.

I also think WM's comment about poppy fascism is pretty close to the truth; there is a certain "thou shalt" air about it all. I may donate to the Royal British Legion, but I must admit I never wear a poppy, (largely because I can never anchor them properly and they always fall off ....)

I rarely wear one but I always donate to the British Legion at this time of year, and do my own remembering. I do sometimes feel obliged to wear one though purely because of people in my company who comment about the wearing of them.

Osc you're right, telly people do wear them from a very early date these days, and I don't necessarily think it's appropriate just yet. November 1st would seem to be about right for starting to wear a poppy, should you choose to do so.

It is far too early, I don't understand it. Yes the British Legion have launched their annual poppy appeal, and I agree with it completely, but surely the time to actually wear them is around the 11th November :?
It's not just this year, it's been happening for a few years, the BBC Breakfast and News teams have worn them from the launch of the appeal I think.

And yes, I'm quite sure the powers-that-be must issue a dictat - and the poppies.
Trouble is of course, they'd come in for an awful lot of flack if there were none on display, or just a random few, but to have every contestant on Strictly wearing them on October 25th is a bit strange.
