Farage and Scotland

If you are pro-Union, then I should think the last think you would want to see is Nigel Farage putting his oar into the frenzied waters of the current debate.

Yes, I'm quite sure there is a lot of anti-Englishness and anti-Toryism in Scotland, but I don't think it's exactly wise to highlight it, assuming you want to save the status quo. Farage should cancel his Friday rally - and in similar vein, I don't think the Orange Order should be marching on Saturday either. That'll be guaranteed to bring more than a few hotheads out on the streets as well ......

They ought to send Harry Hill up there. "Which campaign is best, Yes or No? There's only one way to find out........fight!"

The lodges are marching because they’re scared that NI will also break away and become part Eire.

It’s like demanding a battered wife stay with an abusive husband because it might cause other divorces. That doesn’t just go for NI but all the other disputes currently under way in and out of the EU….

His rant is not helpful and is unwelcome, but that's Farage.

At least he has cleared up what nobody in the "Yes" camp or the media or in Westminster have done and that is tell the truth about the EU when he says:
"The problem for the Scots, though, is if they vote yes next week, they will not get independence. Rather, they are voting for rule by Brussels. As Mr Cameron has brutally discovered, no EU member is truly independent.

He is in rather a strange position, though. His party, UKIP, wants out of the EU. That is the stated position, the main policy, le raison d'être. Which ever way Scotland votes it will be in the EU whether as part of the present Union or as a neo-independent independent country.

I guess he thinks that the situation north of the border is similar to that in the rest of the UK in that many more people agree with UKIP on Europe than actually vote for them. He will be working on the principle that with that bloc he has more chance of taking the UK out of the EU if the Union stays as is.

Personally I don't think he really cares about the Independence vote- I think he only views it as another chance to get exposure for himself.

I think I have Indy fatigue! I post on a couple of other sites and over the last couple of days I haven't been able to summon up any enthusiasm for debating on them.

In saying that if you could all see my FB page you'd think I was some type of mad fanatic-I can only apologise to my non Scottish FB friends for flooding them with Yes info.

I have become so angry at the media bias that I've actually committed myself to attending a protest at the BBC offices in Glasgow on Sunday. I thought my protest days were over but....

WM, behave yourself on the Indy debate-I may be a bit quieter but I am watching you!!

All you "Yes" voters are very quiet when the issue turns to an 'independent' Scotland going full pelt into the EU. How is that independence? Explain. The board is yours. ;)

Lol, Ive told you before-I am voting Yes to become a country that is Independent of Westminster. I am not voting Yes to become Independent of the world!

As an aside, did any of you see televised coverage of the Pro-NHS protest in London at the weekend?

I notice that the bulk of the press are not covering the fact that Salmond accused government ministers of releasing business information before the market, potentially influencing the market at a time when profit could be taken from it.

All in the name of the No campaign.

I wonder how many know that the RBS group, as it is today, is only partly Scots?

I'm keeping my blood pressure down by trying to ignore the totally skewed and biased reports coming from the press....

I know exactly how you feel. The DM is having a field day with their No promotion but, no surprise, are only reporting half stories. Just one example is that they are loudly proclaiming that RBS are leaving Scotland if the vote is Yes. What they are not mentioning is that the CEO of RBS mailed staff today.
RBS' CEO said in a mail to staff:
Dear colleagues
We have today made a statement to the market (see below), providing information on our contingency planning in the event of a Yes vote in next week's referendum on Scottish independence. As you will have seen over the last twenty four hours, other Scottish headquartered financial institutions have made public statements about their intentions. This served to fuel media speculation about our own plans, and in those circumstances, it became necessary for us to update the market on aspects of our contingency planning.

It is my view as Chief Executive that any decision to move our registered headquarters should have no impact on everyday banking services used by our customers in Scotland and the rest of the British Isles. This is a technical procedure regarding the location of our registered head office. It is not an intention to move operations or jobs.

Our current business in Scotland, including the personal and business bank, IT and operations, human resources and many other functions, are here because of the skills and knowledge of our people, and the sound business environment. So far, I see no reason why this would change should we implement our contingency plans.

It is always my aim to ensure we inform our staff about such issues at the earliest opportunity. I know many of you will have already heard about this first in the media. My apologies for that, on this occasion this was unavoidable.

Over the next week, and beyond, we will continue to update you whenever appropriate.
Ross McEwan
Chief Executive

The daughter of a woman who lives near me was present at The Big Debate tonight for 16-17year old in Glasgow. Some were asked to say they were Yes/Don't Know voters simply because the Yes vote was outweighing the No vote. A blatant attempt to try and manipulate the vote for the tv audience.

I could go on and on but I'm even fed up listening to myself now!

In the end it is likely that Salmond is the only one to come out of this looking at all good.
