Independence for Yorkshire - again

Postby cromwell » 05 Sep 2014, 17:55

Well, the TV's been at it again. "The Scottish vote for Independence - will it affect us here in Yorkshire?"

In other words, back to the EU regions, Regional assemblies, Minister for Yorkshire rubbish.

Our local Look North news haven't got down to the eeh by gum, ferrets down trousers, Yorkshire puddin', ghost of Fred Trueman level, but it can't be far off. Regionalism or the devolution of power to the 'regions' is all about EU federalism. Long term it is about the devolution of power from Westminster to the local politicians (my God, you should see ours) and the lessening of power of national parliaments, so that eventually regions are ruled direct from Brussels, with no more national parliaments.

Which in itself is no problem - if everyone is honest about what is happening and why. But they aren't. The initials "EU" are never mentioned.

It is all just a massively dishonest deliberate deception; and you know what? It depresses me; and it depresses me because imo dishonesty can become a habit.

There is certainly a debate to be had about EU federalism, and the EU in general. But we won't ever it seems to me, have an honest debate.

Since the days when Maggie Thatcher got 'creative' with the unemployment figures, through civil servants being "economical with the actualite", and saying "today is a bad day for hiding bad news" through Tony Blair, who couldn't spit straight, through expenses scandals, our political classes just seem to be riddled from top to bottom with dishonest people who see nothing wrong with being dishonest.

What did we ever do to deserve being ruled by people like this?

Cromwell, you need to stop watching BBC Look North, you know it's bad for your health ...... I gave up on BBC Midland Today some time back.

How are the ferrets, BTW?

Watch an independent Scotland rapidly get EU status - all part of your federalisation strategy.

I was watching TV the other afternoon when this came up. There was this graphic as though taken from a plane over the North Sea when leaving Denmark. There on the horizon was the North of the UK with Scotland and Yorkshire in slightly darker shades from the rest. Suddenly up popped a Saltire from Scotland with the legend 5.3m (people) then, after a bit of waffle from the commentator, up popped the Yorkshire Rose, also wiith the 5.3m legend.

The argument, such as it was, centred on both Scotland and Yorkshire having roughly the same size populations, so why couldn't they both be independent.

Well, putting aside the bleedin' obvious in terms of economy, who is asking? Is it Yorkshire people? Is it Hell! Is it Yorkshire's MPs? No. Is it Yorkshire Councils of various types? No again. The ones asking are members of the media and a few flat-capped oddities, the professional Yorkshireman types, with some sort of agenda.

I have no problem with money being spent outside of London on a more equitable basis, in fact I am all for it, but it doesn't need a new layer of political 'gravy trainers' to administer it. No thanks, and all that.

Voting without thinking or not voting at all.

That's what gets us this.

You talked about the Eee by gum factor. Not long after the Scottish parliament was set up, Mrs S oldest friend phoned her and told her to switch her tv on (ours is mainly off and she knew that). It was our deputy first minister speaking on TV. Wat Like, Like, Wat, Ye Ken, Ye Ken. It was virtually unintelligible. Cringeworthy in fact for all educated Scots who would like to present an educated and competent face to the world.

It's one of the reasons I would vote for independence. I would not have without the Scottish parliament. Because that bunch of retread shop stewards are a nightmare and the best we could expect when our best head to Westminster where they have little say but an easier life. At least, after independence, those who aspire to quality politics would have no other place to reside than Hollyrood. Pushing out the undesirables.
