In your device settings on the amazon website, you will find "Approved Personal Document E-mail List". Any mail address there will be allowed to send to your device. You can also set the system to automatically add any books sent to the library.

I never used this and now my second kindle has suffered a broken screen, I have replaced it with a nook.

I was at Heathrow typing on my phone for the one above. So I was keeping it short.

The question was asked, "what would you use this for"?

Well it has a lot of uses. One interesting point is that if you get a document sent to you in a format which the reader can't cope with, then Amazon will re-format it before adding it to your kindle. So, for instance, if you were travelling with the Kindle and someone wanted to send you a word document, they could e-mail it to your Kindle and it would arrive in a format you could read. My brother used to do this for reviewing documents when he was travelling. This meant that he did not have to have his laptop out when he was on a plane, he could simply go over the document on the Kindle, annotate it and then work on it later when he arrived where he was going.

There are lots of reasons for using this service, also if you add it to your library and you have sync enabled, then it will be available on any device you have your kindle reader on.

Just some thoughts for those who only use a kindle to download books from Amazon and read them. Something I must admit I've never done.
