What do you do about / with slugs?

Postby meriad » 09 Jul 2014, 15:19

This year I am inundated with slugs in the garden - they are destroying my Hostas etc :( I'm heading off to Hampton Court Flower Show this coming weekend and will get some Nemaslug then - it's a natural slug control - but in the meantime what to do?

for now I've been sending them flying over the fence to the neighbours property, but they have a homing instinct and I am sure are finding their way under the fence back into my garden. I'm seriously tempted to gather them up in a tub, give them a lettuce leaf to munch on and then under cover of night carry them down the road and dump them in a wooded area; but not sure how legal that is ;)

I bought some organic slug pellets and they seem to be doing the trick. I put them in my tubs and containers. They don't seem to be too troublesome in the actual garden. I don't think I would throw them into the neighbour's garden. Not really the thing to do. salt is very effective too, but it does seem to affect the soil in containers.

i always thought that slugs dont like gravel to crawl on
well thats a lie because 3 times lately in an evening iv seen this enormous
slug travel across a pile of gravel area to the yummy otherside
and it would have to travel back again on a full tummy :)
they do love hostas tho my dad used to put salt on them years ago

Sorry, Rodo - I should have made it clear that the neighbours garden was totally overgrown jungle of just nettles and brambles and has been for years. It gets cut back about once a year but that's about it. He has now cut everything right back and I really thought he was going to do something with it, but nothing as yet - it's just barren empty land..... trust me; I wouldn't throw slugs into a garden that was being used as a garden; I promise!!!!!

I'll have a look at the organic slug pellets but because I have hedgehogs that regularly visit the garden I wouldn't want to have even the slightest risk that whatever I use to control slugs may affect them. Also with the cats I'd worry about them being nosey and trying to eat some of the slug pellets? I'll do some more research on that though.

And I know they are 'only' slugs.... but salt is quite a cruel way to kill them :( and I'd struggle to do that.

I could put them on the road as that would be a quick despatch but it would have to be under cover of night no doubt which means they'll all find their way back to my garden by the time a car comes along; we live on a fairly quiet road, esp at night

Oh sorry Meriad.........hadn't realised. I thought it was a bit odd really, much as I find my neighbours rather obnoxious I wouldn't go so far as to sling my slugs over the fence into theirs. Thought you just had the usual nicely kept garden next door you see.

Bury a couple of jam jars filled with beer, up the rim - the slugs crawl in and drown  They die happy though :P

I think you need a permanent solution Ria, as you obviously have Homing Slugs 8-) ;)
