Is`nt technology wonderful?

Postby lissie » 17 Jun 2014, 11:54

Yesterday Alyssa (grandaughter) flew to Canada to take up her Summer job as
Nanny looking after 4 children :D
This morning at 6am their time she came on Messenger to chat :D :D
She loves what she has seen so far and says the family are so friendly and nice.
She has the whole ground floor as her accomodation.
She will send photos later.
The lady who she is working for has a friend living 5 minutes away who came
from Ramsgate in Kent so if she feels homesick she will have someone to chat to :D

It is amazing isn't it Lizzie.... years back when we moved to SA we relied on regular letters, which used to take about a week to get from us to Germany.

Could you imagine if someone from the 1820's came alive again; how would you explain this all to him / her? One wonders just how much more mankind can / will progress technologically? Will we one day have holograms / beam me up Scotty's ?

Its amazing isn't it Lissie.

I was reading a book (The Last Runaway) which was about two girls travelling on a boat from the UK to America in the 1870's (I think). Not only did it take them 6 weeks to get there but when they did one of them died (apologies if I have just ruined the book for anyone) and the other girl had to write to her parents to tell her. For weeks the letters kept coming from the parents addressed to both of them as it took so long for mail to get through - the daughter had probably been dead 4 months before the parents actually got word.

Technology really is a wonderful thing. :D :D :D

(Hope you grand daughter has a wonderful time)

It is amazing 8-) :) My mum's best friend emigrated in the early 60s as a Ten Pound Pom (basically as long as you had your passage of £10 you could go!) and they relied on letters a few times a year, Christmas cards, and the very very rare times that C 'came home' to see her English family!! Nowadays they would have skyped!!! The world truly has shrunk for this generation!

Lissie I am so glad A is settling in nicely 8-) :) :)

It certainly makes one wonder how much further technology can advance.

Things are so different now from when I was a child in the 1920's and 30's.
Whether all these wonderful things will ultimately prove to be a good thing
remains to be seen. If we could look into the future I wonder what we would see.

To be honest, it sometimes frightens me.
