I have just looked at Salisbury Cathedral website. They ask for a donation and suggest £6.50 for adults. They say that they get no financial support from the government or from the Church of England so have to rely on donations :(

The government's bad enough but why on earth don't they get money from the Church of England?!

You go to Sacre Coeur, which is beautiful, and just wait till any service has ended then you can go in for nothing :) You could almost get there for what some cathedrals are charging too :D The Catholic church would of course be different, but I guess they charge here too.

I've wondered a good few times though, surely if they only charged £1 or £2 they'd make more? There's usually a donation box at churches we've visited and I've always been happy to put £1 in :)

That's what I can't understand either :?

I've often popped into Lichfield Cathedral, not for religious reasons as I'm not at all religious but it's just a beautiful building and I walk around in awe of the craftsmanship from centuries ago. I always leave a donation.

I suppose that the large Cathedrals, particularly in London, charge that amount because they know that tourists will be willing to pay it.
