FOA Loz

You were asking about Winchester.... it was lovely. Sadly the wind was quite nippy and we knew we had quite a lengthy lunch sessions planned so didn't have much time to walk very far; but from what we saw it's very pretty. We stuck to the main shopping area, ie the High Street and the the little roads that lead off the high street and towards the Cathedral Square. Winchester does remind me of Guildford quite a bit, just not as steep - they're both pretty town centres with lots of little shops vs one larger shopping mall; but I got the impression that there are more of the expensive brands in Winchester. We had a quick look into the cathedral but didn't go right in because we didn't have a lot of time and they were charging £8.00 to go in, so we'll keep that for another day.

I definitely would like to go back but next time do a bit more research about things to do.... this time I didn't really bother as the main thing was going to be the lunch (which was very very very yummy)

Loving the song - I remember it well :D 8-)

Shocking they charge to go into the Cathedral - surely a church should be free to all, with donations voluntary :? :( :(

Kaz, I can understand that they have to charge a fair whack - it's a beautiful and very large cathedral and no doubt costs an arm and a leg to maintain and I would suspect they get very little funding from places like the government, lottery, national trusts etc.

I need to double check next time because I'm not sure if that price was for a guided tour or just entry; because you could also borrow those audio guide things for £3.00 :?

I think the Church of England probably has enough wealth to maintain its cathedrals ;) I feel strongly that places of worship should be accessible to all.

Just my opinion though ;) :D

I agree.
We went into St Pauls when we had a weekend in London last November, neither of us had been in before and we were passing. We only went in because it was the Sunday morning and it was free due to being open for worship - otherwise it would've been £16 EACH at any other time! :o
