Crimea Referendum

Postby Workingman » 17 Mar 2014, 13:55

Turnout is said to be between 75% and 80%, 97% of those are in favour of returning to the Russia Federation. The vote is in line with the ethnic make-up of the Crimea. Crimea's parliament has declared the region an independent state, but it is not recognised by the International community because the referendum has been declared null and void. Meanwhile the EU has imposed sanctions on 21 Russian nationals and frozen the assets of some businesses.

Kosovo did not bother with a referendum, it went straight to war. Its ethnic Albanian majority wanted independence and went all-out for it. NATO joined in on the side of what was described by the UN as a Terrorist Organisation, the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and bombed Serbia: Belgrade in particular. When the dust had settled and Serbia had been subdued for wanting to keep Kosovo as part of Serbia, Kosovo was recognised as an independent state by 108 members of the UN.

It is good to be consistent.

Interesting to see what happens if Scotland votes Yes in its referendum. We won't bomb them, I guess, just impose economic sanctions.

Pleased to see May hinting at border controls last week ......

I don't see why other countries are bothering so much about it.
Surely it doesn't affect them, does it?

Why do politicians have to poke their noses into other country's affairs ?

We are playing with fire if we interfere with what is going on, the support and desire to become Part of Russia is overwhelming. Who are we to interfere "yet again poking our nose in other people's affairs"? we need to remember that
Had it not been for the Russians who sacrificed millions in the last war we would have been governed by the Swastika .

I always thought the whole point of democracy was self-determination! As far as I can see the people of the Crimea have made themselves very plain - and we should keep right out of it!

So should the Yanks, but fat chance of that :?

It is high time the European powers and this country in particular saw the light about warmongering N. America. :(
