Good morning Thursday

Postby debih » 27 Feb 2014, 07:57

Morning all.

I'm back off to the minor injuries unit with L. It's been almost 3 weeks since she came home saying her foot hurt and 2 weeks since we went to minor injuries for the X-ray and they said it was fractured. Then the following day we visited the fracture clinic to be told there was nothing wrong with it.

Well, that foot with nothing wrong with it is still almost twice the size of the other foot and is still really hurting her. So I thought we would go back to minor injuries to see what they say to do. And I know that their X-ray department is open today so hopefully they will X-ray it again.

morning all - a rather miserable, wet, windy and grey start to the day here, but it's meant to clear up later (hopefully!)

Debih, that definitely doesn't sound right - good luck and hope you figure out today what's going on.

Well, thats all sorted!

The nurse was fab. I love our minor injuries department at the cottage hospital. We walked through the door at 8.15am, were seen by 8.25am and were on our way to school by 8.35am!

She has sprained it. The nurse explained all about the ligaments running down the side and across the top of the foot. She told her that she mustn't do any high impact sport or dance (she is doing orienteering and the waltz at the moment so the nurse said she would be fine with that). She needs to put an ice pack on it every evening when she gets home from school to help with the swelling and she has given her some exercises to do to help strengthen it.

She explained that she needed to go back after 6 weeks (the doctor at the big fracture clinic told me to make an appiontment for six weeks but didn't say why) so that they can check that it has all healed properly and that she won't need an operation to fix anything. The nurse said that if it was still painful in a week or so and we wanted to go back to the fracture clinic early then for me to ring the minor injury unit and they would make the appointment for me.

She told L that she mustn't just battle on - if the foot was hurting then she could take calpol or similar.

School were fab when I dropped her off. I need to write to the PE and Dance teachers to say that Lucy has a sprained foot and although can take part in some PE and dance she needs to be careful and may need to sit it out sometimes - that way the receptionist says it gives L the control over whether she does it or not rather than the teacher. And she told L that if at any time her foot was hurting she must come to the office and they would apply an ice pack.

Why did it take a nurse, two weeks later, to tell me all that rather than the consultant that we saw at the fracture clinic. Grrrrrrr.
