Oh dear, on balance, I think box junction cameras are nothing more than a cash cow for the council, I'm afraid, and I don't agree with them at all. In fact, I'm not entirely sure I agree with box junctions .....
.... but I don't think they should fine as sometimes it can't be helped.
Absolutely this. Near us there is a traffic crossroads with a box junction (The Yenton, Wylde Green). Three lanes of traffic north / south, two lanes of traffic east / west. But on the west side, the two lanes rapidly become one lane and as debih says, you are in the lap of the gods whether traffic suddenly stops and blocks you or not. Now imagine turning right (from the north) into this road (going west). And this junction is also traffic light controlled. If you didn't "force" your way out into the box junction, many times you'd simply not stand a chance of swinging round into the west-bound road, because it simply clogs up.
The solution is to revise junctions like this so there is adequate room for traffic to flow through and past it without hindrance.
Imagine coming from the top of the picture and turning right ......
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ie=UTF-8 ... JMBEPwSMAsMy personal solution? I never turn right at this junction. I pick my way round back streets so if I want to pick up that west-bound road, I'm approaching it not from the north but the east - so I go straight across.
If they put a camera on this junction, they'd make a fortune ......
