sad day yesterday

Gus my daughter is an avid animal lover. She takes in strays, and local cats make their way to her door as she always puts food out for them ( lest they haven't been fed!!) She had six cats, all ancient up until yesterday, Ruby was a stray who she took in ten or more years ago, she was attacked by another cat around ten years ago and lost an eye.
She has been unwell for around six weeks, was put on thyroxin and other medication, the cost of vets bills has been enormous, I suggested the kindest act would be to help her go to rest, she was so upset saying she seemed a little better.
Last night at 7.p.m. she rang me and asked me to go to the vets with her as Ruby seemed worse.. We arrived at the vets and her cat stood up "look she is better" said Gus.. She wasn't of course., The vet said that she had kidney failure and the kindest thing would be to help her on her way.. Poor Gus who can never seem to cry looked bereft.
I made up for it seeing her pain and was in tears, Ruby was given an injection to put her to sleep, at this point Gus said she herself had a pain in her chest as Ruby drifted off to sleep being held gently by Gus, fifteen minutes later the vet gave her another injection and shortly afterwards Ruby died. Gusty's grief was obvious and this was her pain.. We brought Ruby home and she was buried in the garden this morning The vet was lovely an Irish lad very sensitive and caring.

Kate, we had to make this decision for our lovely cat a couple of weeks ago. It was very sad, but sometimes this is just the right thing to do for our pets x

I agree with Loz, the hardest, most selfless act we can do. I hope Gus is feeling a little better today and you too Kate

Thanks for loving replies, I coped, it was seeing Gusty's pain that so upset me..
I know how she felt, we were all in grief when our old Labrador was put to sleep in our old house, and I would be bereft if anything happened to my Barney he was my saving grace following the death of my dear husband.
I tend to have water on the brain I used to cry when I saw tearful people bidding each other goodbye at airports, it is terrible not to be able to let go. She looks utterly exhausted today
Bless her she is going through a rough period in her life.

Couldn't agree more Kaz, she could not cry when her father died and has not cried since!! I told her to look at the wonderfully relaxing video of a Japanese
woman "The power of concentration" Sadly Kaz however gifted we might be in our profession, treating our own is virtually an impossibility.
