tip for certificate errors on VV

Postby Suff » 19 Oct 2024, 13:06

I have been having issues with using browsers against my VMWare server and the certificate warnings are causing me no end of issues. So I had to search for a resolution.

I configured my Kaspersky which worked for that but edge and every other browser was throwing an error.

The fix in edge and Chrome (edge is a chormium browser), is ludicrously simple.

When you get the certificate error simply click anywhere on that page and type, blind, thisisunsafe then press enter.

Fixed. This is very noddy stuff which professionals really don't like. Very Google. But it works.

Now that I've fixed this for VV too, I no longer have to click 4 times every time I open the site fresh and also I don't get the time-out issues I was getting where I had to go back and refresh the post or lose my post.

Hopefully this will help people facing issues.

OK so that didn't stick. I still have the firewall exception but the browser hack didn't stick. I managed to get a server exemption in Firefox and add the certificate to it and VV is now valid in Firefox. Chrome and Edge are resisting to the bitter end.

All the articles say add the cert to the trusted root cert path but when I do that with Firefox it tells me it is not a trusted root certificate.

Very irritating.

I do not use Edge or Firefox so cannot really comment.

I use Opera and Vivaldi most of the time with Brave for more secure things. The only problem I have, and it is very intermittent, is with VV in Opera and refresh times. I posted about it on Feedback ages ago.

I initially "solved" it by changing my DNS route but it's back again. I sometimes click to post or go to another topic or board and the thing just sits and cycles and cycles before it decides where to go. According to the Opera forums it is a known bug, especially on non HTTPS sites.

I can live with it...

Yep some things are worse. If I left a post for more than about 10 minutes it was get locked in a security exception cycle which I had to force it out of.

It's getting irritating. Fixing the AV warning is good though, that was two of the clicks I needed to get in.

I'll stick with Firefox for now. I get zero warnings with it now.

Well, HTTPS is now the thing, but for small message boards such as V V where we are not posting personal details - banking, insurance, NHS etc. - it can be costly and not worth it.

I think that we are all wise enough on here not to post phone numbers, email addresses, home addresses, NI numbers and so on. Long may it stay that way.
