Anyone had a carpet fitted recently

We have had a quote for our front room. The room is 4.5m x 4.0m and the quotes are £799.90 or £864.60 depending on which one we choose

We were a bit surprised but not having had a carpet fitted since the stairs in 2017 maybe we are just out of touch?

We could shop around, but he has been recommended and we are pretty much settled, but just wondered how it compared with a store for instance

Our room is about 5m by 4 and ours cost just under £600. The carpet isn't wool but it's a good quality, Tribeca by Associated Weavers. The guy we used is independent and runs his own small company. Doreen used him first, so it was on her recommendation. It only took him two hours, if that. The underlay was still good, so reused, and Mick moved the furniture out first.

Shell, what!? That's roughly £47 per sq/m. What is it, pure silk with 18 carat gold highlights?

My lounge is about the same size, 18 sq/m, and I had it done a couple of years ago with a wool blend for something like £19 per sq/m from an independent. Underlay was reused and fitting was free. I don't do cheap.

I know things are dearer 'darn sarf' but crikey!

That includes 10mm underlay, all the gripper rods, a door threshold and an across the room threshold plus fitting.

Shell, can't help with the carpet as I have wood floor, but I think the big difference in cost will be the labour - a smaller independent guy may be able to tweak a few things, vs larger stores like carpet right have their set prices etc.
You can always buy the carpet you want, but shop around for the underlay and get some quotes from independent people? Ask on a site like NextDoor or your local town FB page for recommendations maybe?

We’ve chosen the carpet from an independent recommended man. He supplies everything.

Our stair carpet was fitted by Carpet Right but it’s not fitted brilliantly and the chap that came Friday said the stores sub contract and offer free fitting and pay the fitters per carpet but that means they have to fit as many as possible

Karl and Nadine also had their stair carpet fitted by a larger company and it really wasn't a good job done.
Shell, I think at the end of the day everything has just gone so much more expensive and if you're comfortable and most important trust the guy then go with it.

I tend to agree with Ria, if this chap's been recommended and you know he does a good job, I'd go with it
