It says that if we follow its use less water campaign, the £100m campaign we customers will be paying for through our bills, then "households" (note that word) could save up to £500 per year on their bills. Absolute ball cocks for ordinary users!

My total bill from 02 Nov 2022 to 02 Nov 2023 came to a massive £153.19 inc standing charges - I just checked my quarterly bills.

To be "saving" £500 per year would mean drastic cuts for them, maybe over 25% of their current usage and they would still be using lots of water! Their bills will be in the region of £2,000 per year. That's getting on for 12 cubic metres per week.

No "average" household could be using that much, surely? Maybe Ofwat should be chasing down these profligates and leave the rest of us alone.

Our last "annual" charge (readings in August) was £177, all in. And there's two of us, WM.

Wessex Water's idea of daily usage and my idea of daily usage are light-years apart. But there again, I don't take daily showers and am quite happy to stink like a polecat! I can identify with the £3,334 cups of tea, though.

Anyway, the biggest way to save money on water, if you're a household of two or less and currently still on the old-fashioned billing system linked to rates, is to get a water meter installed. Depending on your circumstances, that could save you anything up to £400 ........

Ossie, I have been on a water meter for as long as I can remember. The new one - about four years old - is read automatically so no need for a bod with a usage recorder any more.

I am with United Utilities and have a water meter.

On my recent bill dated 30th October 2023,
I have used 28cubic metre- 28,000 litres of water. This has cost me £ 322.11
My next payment will be £21.56. I am not economical. I just run the water when I need it.

Ours was around £300 last year, but then there are 3 adults here and the washer gets run a lot….

I cannot imagine just what you’d have to be doing to even get a bill of £500, never mind a saving of that figure

Nor me Kaz, and I do not ration water, as such, if it's needed it's needed.

Sorry, Cruiser, but I do not quite get your numbers.

Your £322.11 must be your cumulative bill for all services for 23 / 24 thus far. It would give you an annual bill around £552. IMHO that is extremely high for a single user. UU says that an expected "average" household water bill for 2023/24 is £443. I would be doing some checks and asking questions.

This was always the plan. Bring in meters at a low per unit cost. Ramp up rates to unacceptable levels to push people onto meters. Then, when everyone is on a meter, start raising the per unit cost.

It is normal business practise.
