My grandson is being christened today and in telling some friends about it I mentioned that I hoped the water would be warm when he was dunked in the font. They laughed at me and said that did not happen. What is the font for then, there might just as well be a cup of water on a table if it is just for putting on the baby`s head.

I think it depends on which religion it is.

Some use total immersion but in the C of E the priest just dips his fingers in the water
and dabs it on the child's forehead. (At least, that's what they used to do).
